The question many believers wrestle with is: “Am I called to be a missionary?” While all Christians are called to live mission-minded, some are specifically set apart to go to the nations. How can you discern this calling?
The General Call
Every believer is called to participate in God’s mission. Jesus said in John 20:21, “As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” This general call is universal—we are all sent ones.
The Specific Call
For some, God gives a specific assignment: to leave their home and go to another people group or nation. This may come through prayer, Scripture, prophetic confirmation, or a burden for a particular culture. Paul received a vision of a man from Macedonia saying, “Come over and help us” (Acts 16:9).
How to Discern
Intimacy with God. The closer you walk with Him, the clearer His direction becomes.
Confirmation. God often confirms His call through leaders, mentors, or repeated promptings.
Burden. Do you feel an unshakable compassion for a specific people group? That may be the Spirit’s leading.
Open doors. Opportunities often align with God’s calling.
Obedience Is Key
The call of a missionary is not about feelings but obedience. Isaiah responded, “Here am I. Send me!” (Isaiah 6:8). God looks for willing hearts more than perfect plans.
A Personal Challenge
If you sense God may be calling you, start by praying earnestly: “Lord, here is my life. Where do You want me?” Take steps of faith—join a short-term trip, serve cross-culturally, or support missionaries.
Whether God calls you to go, send, or intercede, your role is vital in His mission. The world is waiting for obedient hearts.
Will you say yes?
